After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we’ll check out and make our way to the Tangier Ferry Port for a unique and historically rich crossing. Today, we’ll sail from Africa to Europe via the Strait of Gibraltar, retracing the steps of one of the most pivotal moments in Islamic history.
Ferry to Tarifa: Following the Path of Tariq Ibn Ziyad
Our ferry journey across the Strait of Gibraltar not only connects two continents, but it also echoes the historic route taken by Tariq Ibn Ziyad in 711 CE. It was from these very shores that Tariq led his forces across the strait, landing near Gibraltar (Jabal Tariq, or “Mountain of Tariq”), marking the beginning of the Muslim conquest of Spain and the establishment of Al-Andalus. As we sail, take a moment to reflect on this monumental event, where a small army went on to reshape the history of Europe forever.
The crossing, lasting just under an hour, offers stunning views of both the Moroccan and Spanish coastlines, symbolizing the historic and cultural exchanges that have taken place across these waters for centuries.
Arrival in Tarifa: A Step Into History
Upon arriving at the historical port city of Tarifa, we’ll step onto European soil, much like Tariq Ibn Ziyad did over 1,300 years ago. Tarifa’s old town, with its ancient walls and narrow streets, still holds echoes of its past as a critical fortress in the defense and expansion of Muslim rule in Spain.
After disembarking, we’ll explore the old town of Tarifa, where you can appreciate its historical significance as both a military stronghold and a key entry point for the Muslim armies into Europe. You’ll have some time to walk through its charming streets and reflect on the incredible history that unfolded here before we continue deeper into Andalusia, where we’ll delve further into the rich legacy of Al-Andalus.

Walking Tour of the City’s Islamic Legacy
After arriving in the vibrant city of Seville, we’ll settle in for a delicious lunch, savoring Andalusian flavors before embarking on a captivating guided walking tour of this beautiful and historic city. Known for its stunning architecture, lively atmosphere, and deep-rooted history, Seville offers a window into the Islamic, Jewish, and Christian legacies that have shaped its identity.
Exploring Seville’s Historic and Cultural Gems
Your guide will lead you through Seville’s Jewish Quarter—Barrio de Santa Cruz, a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets that exudes old-world charm. As you walk through this quarter, you’ll hear stories of how Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities coexisted and thrived in this diverse city during the golden age of Al-Andalus.
We’ll then visit the iconic Giralda, the towering minaret of Seville’s original mosque, which now serves as the bell tower of the Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world. The Giralda, with its striking fusion of Islamic and Gothic architectural styles, stands as a testament to Seville’s rich Islamic past. Originally constructed in 1198 under Almohad rule, it has since been incorporated into the cathedral complex, preserving its Andalusian heritage.
Next, we’ll walk to the grand and expansive Plaza de España, a masterpiece of Moorish Revival architecture built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition. The plaza’s semi-circular design, complete with intricate tilework and a canal, reflects both Spanish and Andalusian influences. It’s a perfect spot to admire the blend of Islamic motifs and modern design.
From there, we’ll make our way to the Torre del Oro, a 13th-century tower originally built by the Almohads to protect the city from naval invasions along the Wadi al-Kabir (Guadalquivir River). This tower, with its golden reflection on the river, once served as a watchtower and defensive barrier, symbolizing Seville’s strategic importance during the Muslim rule of Al-Andalus.
Finally, we’ll stroll along the banks of the Guadalquivir River—the Wadi al-Kabir—whose waters once carried the ships of Muslim explorers and traders, linking Seville to the wider Islamic world. The river’s significance in Seville’s history is profound, serving as a lifeline for trade, transport, and defense.
After the tour, you’ll have free time to enjoy the city at your own pace before returning to your hotel for an overnight stay in Seville.

Guided Visit to the Royal Alcazar of Seville
After exploring the vibrant streets of Seville the day before and taking in its rich history, the tour continues to one of the most awe-inspiring highlights of your journey: the Royal Alcazar of Seville. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a Christian Royal Palace constructed in the Moorish architectural style, making it one of the most unique and breathtaking palaces in all of Europe.
The Royal Alcazar: A Testament to Islamic Architecture
Originally built by the Moors in the early 10th century, and later expanded by Christian rulers, the Alcazar is a stunning example of Mudéjar architecture—a blend of Islamic art and design with Christian influences. Walking through the palace feels like stepping into the grandeur of Al-Andalus. Its intricately carved arches, colorful zellij (tilework), and tranquil courtyards embody the legacy of Islamic Spain, even centuries after the Reconquista.
Your guide will share the fascinating story of how this palace, initially built for Muslim rulers, was transformed into a royal residence for Spanish kings, and it remains a functioning royal palace to this day. Its halls and gardens have witnessed the rule of both Muslim and Christian monarchs, making it a living symbol of Spain’s layered history.
Inside the Walls: What to Expect
Inside the Alcazar’s walls, you will find the exquisite Patio de las Doncellas, or Courtyard of the Maidens, named after a legend of tributes exacted from the Christian kingdoms by the Moors. This courtyard, with its long reflecting pool, flanked by sunken gardens, is surrounded by stunning arches and intricate stucco work. It’s a peaceful oasis, where the harmony between water, greenery, and architecture creates a sense of calm and beauty.
Next, you’ll see the Salón de los Embajadores (Hall of Ambassadors), the heart of the palace and its most magnificent room. The dazzling dome, decorated with gold and vibrant geometric designs, will transport you back to the golden age of Islamic rule in Spain. It was here that monarchs would meet diplomats and visitors from across the world, surrounded by opulence and splendor.
As you explore the palace further, you’ll wander through beautifully designed gardens, filled with fragrant orange trees, fountains, and tranquil paths. The Alcazar Gardens are themselves a work of art, blending Moorish, Renaissance, and modern designs to create an enchanting escape from the city’s bustle.
A Speechless Experience
The beauty and craftsmanship of the Royal Alcazar will leave you speechless, as every corner reveals a new masterpiece of Islamic artistry, interwoven with Spain’s Christian heritage. This palace stands as a testament to the lasting influence of Islamic culture in Spain, and it serves as a symbol of the cultural fusion that defines Seville.
After the tour of the Royal Alcazar, the evening will be yours to enjoy, perhaps reflecting on the incredible history you’ve witnessed, before returning to your hotel for a restful overnight stay in Seville.
Transfer to Cordoba
You will then make your way to the city that was known as the ornament of the world, Cordoba. The jewel in the crown of Islamic Spain. 2 hour comfortable drive with some spectacular views of the Spanish countryside.
Arrival in Córdoba – The Great Mosque of Córdoba
Upon arriving in the historic city of Córdoba, our journey through the heart of Islamic Spain continues with a visit to one of the most iconic symbols of the nearly 800 years of Islamic presence in Al-Andalus: the Great Mosque of Córdoba. Once the grandest mosque in the western Islamic world, this architectural marvel stands as a testament to the golden age of Muslim Spain—though, sadly, it was later converted into a cathedral following the Reconquista.
The Great Mosque of Córdoba: A Journey Through Time
We’ll head straight to the Mezquita-Catedral where you will meet your local expert guide, who will escort you on an immersive journey through the history of this magnificent structure. Your guide will explain how the mosque was first built in 784 CE under the direction of Abd al-Rahman I, the first Umayyad ruler of Al-Andalus. Over the centuries, the mosque was expanded by successive rulers, reaching its final grandeur under Al-Mansur in the 10th century. Its vast prayer hall, renowned for its hundreds of arches and columns, became one of the most important religious sites in the Muslim world.
The Arches and Columns: A Forest of Beauty
As you step inside, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an enchanting forest of over 850 columns and double-tiered arches, designed to evoke the image of palm trees in an oasis. The architectural ingenuity of the arches not only creates a sense of infinite space but also enhances the spiritual experience for those who once gathered here for prayer. These columns, crafted from jasper, onyx, and marble, stand as silent witnesses to the mosque’s legacy and Islamic artistry.
The Mihrab: A Miraculous Survivor
One of the most awe-inspiring features of the mosque is the Mihrab, the prayer niche that points toward Mecca. Incredibly, despite the mosque’s transformation into a cathedral, the Mihrab still retains its original beauty, adorned with intricate mosaics and verses from the Qur’an that miraculously survived the conversion. The dazzling gold and rich calligraphy of the Mihrab reflect the height of Umayyad art and serve as a lasting reminder of the Islamic heritage of this sacred space.
Your guide will detail the profound significance of this site, explaining how it was not only a place of worship but also a symbol of power, culture, and intellectual achievement during the rule of the Umayyads in Al-Andalus.
Conversion to a Cathedral
After the Reconquista, in 1236, the mosque was converted into a cathedral by the Christian rulers of Spain. The construction of a Renaissance-style cathedral nave within the heart of the mosque is a striking and controversial contrast that reflects the complex history of religious and cultural transformation in Spain. As you explore, you’ll notice the juxtaposition of Islamic and Christian elements, serving as a powerful reminder of the shifts in power and faith that shaped the region.
A Lasting Legacy
Though the Great Mosque of Córdoba is now a cathedral, it remains a breathtaking monument to the era of Islamic rule in Spain and continues to inspire visitors with its unparalleled beauty and grandeur. The combination of Islamic artistry with Christian influence makes it one of the most unique and historically significant structures in the world. Your visit here will leave you in awe of the cultural and religious legacy that still echoes through its halls.
After exploring the mosque, you’ll have free time to wander the surrounding Juderia (Jewish Quarter) or relax before an overnight stay in Córdoba, where the spirit of Al-Andalus continues to live on in every corner of the city.

Excursion to Alpujarra
As we bring our journey through the captivating history of Islamic Spain to a close, we venture to the Alpujarra mountains. Here, we follow in the footsteps of the last Muslim king as he gazed upon the mountains and mourned the loss of nearly 800 years of Islamic legacy.
The Alpujarra also served as a sanctuary for the Moriscos, Muslims who were forced to convert to Christianity, fleeing from persecution and seeking refuge in this region.
Their brief time in the Alpujarra is a significant moment in their history, serving as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of intolerance and forced assimilation. This final stop on our journey serves as a fitting conclusion to the story of Islamic Spain, once a vibrant hub of diverse cultures, religions, and traditions.
Old Muslim bridge
As we enter the Alpujarra mountains we stop at the Nasrid bridge, or the old Muslim bridge. Hundreds of years old it was the only access into the Alpujarra given the Muslims some kind of relative safety until King Phillip II decided to send an army in to finally brutally expel the Muslims from the whole region and the rest of Spain.
Lanjaron Castle
Our tour concludes at a symbolic site, a ruined castle that serves as a testament to the resilience and bravery of the Muslim community in Spain.
This castle was one of the last places where a small group of Muslims made a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful stand against the Christian army.
This final stop on our journey serves as a poignant reminder of the perseverance and courage of those who fought to hold onto their cultural and religious identity in the face of overwhelming odds.
Baraka Restaurant
Our journey ends at a tranquil restaurant in the heart of the Alpujarra mountains, where the owner, a Spanish Muslim, extends a warm welcome and delectable cuisine.
This halal restaurant, located in an unexpected location, symbolizes the rebirth of Muslim culture in Spain and the triumph of resilience over adversity.
The owner’s personal story and the restaurant’s impact on the local community serve as a reminder of the power of Islam to endure and thrive despite challenges.
As we savor the flavors of Spain and reflect on our journey, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage and strength of the Muslim community, and honor their journey back to this status through hard work and determination.

From Granada to Madrid – A Stop in Toledo, the City of Three Cultures
As we make our way from the stunning city of Granada towards Spain’s capital, Madrid, we’ll stop at one of the most historically significant cities in all of Europe: Toledo. Known as the “City of Three Cultures”, Toledo is a living testament to the coexistence of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities during the golden age of Al-Andalus. This city played a pivotal role in the transfer of Islamic knowledge to Europe, marking it as one of the most important cultural hubs of medieval Spain.
Toledo: The Transfer of Islamic Knowledge
During the Islamic rule of Spain, and even after the Reconquista, Toledo became a center of translation and intellectual exchange, where scholars from different faiths came together to translate great works of Islamic, Greek, and Roman knowledge into Latin and Spanish. This period, known as the Toledo School of Translators, facilitated the transfer of key texts in philosophy, science, mathematics, and medicine from the Muslim world to Europe, shaping the European Renaissance. The legacy of this intellectual exchange remains woven into the city’s identity, and its significance cannot be overstated.
Walking Tour of Toledo: A City of Harmony
Upon arrival in Toledo, you’ll embark on a guided walking tour through the city’s charming historic streets. As you stroll along the picturesque cobblestone lanes, you’ll be transported back in time to an era when Toledo was a beacon of cultural harmony. The city’s Christian, Muslim, and Jewish influences are still visible in its architecture, culture, and daily life.
Historic Highlights and Cultural Tapestry
Toledo’s medieval architecture is a visual reflection of its rich history. You’ll explore the intricate Mudejar-stylebuildings—Christian structures built by Muslim artisans—and marvel at the blending of these cultural elements. Highlights of the tour include:
Mosque of Cristo de la Luz: Originally a mosque built during the Muslim rule, this small yet beautiful structure is one of the few surviving mosques in the city.
Toledo’s Jewish Quarter: Home to Synagogue of El Tránsito, an incredible example of Mudéjar architecture, and Santa María la Blanca, a former synagogue-turned-church that stands as a symbol of Toledo’s multi-religious past.
Toledo Cathedral: A towering Gothic masterpiece, built upon the foundations of a former mosque, and one of the most important cathedrals in Spain.
As you walk through the city, you’ll also have the chance to admire the panoramic views from its famous lookouts, where you can take in the beauty of Toledo’s landscape, with the Tagus River encircling the city and the Alcázar of Toledo standing guard above.
Toledo’s Unique Atmosphere
In addition to its historical landmarks, Toledo offers a vibrant atmosphere with its traditional shops and cafés lining the streets. Here, you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while soaking in the city’s unique blend of heritage and culture. From handmade swords—crafted using techniques passed down since the days of Al-Andalus—to intricate ceramic work and Toledo’s famous marzipan sweets, the city’s craftsmanship reflects its long and storied past.
After a day spent immersing yourself in Toledo’s rich cultural tapestry, we’ll continue our journey to Madrid, where you’ll settle in for an overnight stay in the capital city.
